Opening Ceremonies...Our First Game...
February 12, 2006
In two short days, so much has happened. First of all, the Opening Ceremonies were amazing! I got to walk in the front of the USA athletes because I was nominated by our federation to carry the Opening Ceremony flag. That honor, and VERY well deserved, was given to Chris Witty, who is a five time Olympian in speedskating (one of those 5 was in the summer Games in cycling!). I was able to go skiing with her and a few of my teammates after the games were over in Salt Lake City, so we were pumped that she was able to carry the flag into the stadium. After the first loop and lots of waiving, I waited for the rest of my team...who were positioned at the back (you get better air time there we have heard). It was just so cool to see thousands of people cheering hysterically and waiving thier respective flags with such pride. We watched most of ceremony from the middle of the ring and unfortunately, the view was somewhat blocked by all of the athletes. When the ferrari spun circles in the middle of the arena, all we could see and smell was the smoke. Nonetheless, it was so cool to be a part of the audience and to see all of the beautiful artistry put on be the Italians. My team took lots of pictures...I'll post a few of them. Also keep checking in the Photos section for the latest.
There were hundreds of Olympians trying to get back to the village after the ceremony was over. We all had to take the city buses home together. Picture this: socres of Olympians from all parts of the world, crammed together on buses with adrenaline pumping. As athletes, we were all very hungry after a night of excitement, so we packed the dining hall in the village. Courtney and I stayed up to watch an episode of Lost, our favorite show, and then it was off to bed...
We woke up at 7 to head to the rink for our pre-game skate. Finally, is all I can say. I was so ready to get the show on the road. We have been training, non-stop, for the last 6 months for this moment. The game started off going back and forth. But, we eventually tired the Swiss team out. Their goalie was unreal, stopping over 50 shots on us. It was a great game to play in because it got out team into the tournament (and with 11 new Olympians, this was important). We never let up...1-0 after the first, 2-0 after the second, and finally 6-0 at the end of the game. We played as a team, too. This is one thing I was concerned about. In the easier games, it is particularly easy to stray away from team play and have individuals want to do everything themselves. But, this team is different, and we had 5 different scorers and everyone contributed. It was a team effort all the way. Barbara Bush was in the stands to cheer us on, so I was happy that we made America proud in our first day of competition!

Wow!
I am an avid hockey fan, but have to admit I really only watch the NHL (Ranger fan!).
But now after watching your games, all I can say is 'I gotta watch more!'
You and your team play an exciting game and the stick handling skills you guys have is stuff only on highlight reels for the NHL!!
Your average play is phenominal and so fun to watch!
I am amazed and can't wait to see more games!
Anyway, GOOD LUCK to you and your team!
I definitely will be watching!
Congrats on your second win as well.
:)
GO USA!

All I can say is "wow". Women's hockey is all I've been watching since the Olympics started and seeing you along with your teammates play was so amazing. It's like watching an NHL All-Star game! The whole team knows where everyone else is on the ice and you're able to make some of the most remarkable plays I've ever seen. Growing up playing and watching hockey, it's great to see you out there having so much fun! From a fellow Southeast Michigander, I won't wish you luck to jinx it, but I'll be listening along with you to our national anthem during the medal ceremonies.

I'm impressed. Two games; two shutouts. I used to play hockey in Medford, Massachusetts, Pee Wee through high school. Back then we didn't have women's hockey. Girls were considered too pretty and fragile for such a rough sport. I'm glad to see you ladie's wear full face masks; keeps your teeth, and keeps you pretty, which I might add, you and several other of your team mates are quite attractive. Another surprise to me. No offense, but I was thinking of masculine looking Amazon's. Wrong-o, bud! Hey, good luck (which you shouldn't need cuz your all good anyway) and go get that Gold Medal! My husband and I just got finished watching the USA's win over Germany. It was a great game. We remember a few of you from the 2002 team. The USA played in a warm-up game vs China in Boise, ID and we saw that too. We gave the team a coin from the 366th Fighter Wing and 366th Component Repair Squadron and were wondering if the team still has these in the skate sharpener. We don't think it's likely, but we had to ask. Go for Gold!!! We'll be watching.

You must be so happy to be back at the Olympics and mixing it up for the gold.

I just watched your game against Germany..what a great team the US is this year. It was exciting to see Sarah Parsons get her first Olympic goal, not to mention another. It is amazing to watch your skills on defense as well as in front of the net on the powerplay. I'm the captain of the team at Sandwich High School, that you coached for a day at Gallo. I am so excited, as is my whole team, to see the clips from that practice during your game Tuesday vs. Finland. The games are so exciting! I felt like I was right there with you on the ice. TThis is my first time on your site and not my last and I was excited to see that your camps are open to all ages, not many of those here on Long Island NY. Here I am forced to play open hockey with men, who are not too happy with a "girl" on the ice, or on a roller hockey league with....yep men. Not many options for a girl over the age of 21..heading twards 30. But I still get out there to skate. Best of Luck, I'll watching all the way to the gold!

You are such an amazing hockey player!!! I saw you play last year in Canada at the Women's championship and since then you've been my favorite hockey player! When I found out that you had coached the Sandwich Girls over the summer and I had missed that practice I was extremly dissapointed, even more when I found out they'd be airing it on NBC over the Olympics!! I look up to you so much! I recently started playing defense too and love it, my coach always wants me to play more offensive though and whenever he says that I think of you!! Anyway I wish you the best of luck in the olympics and hope that you will come back to the Cape to coach again!...I will be watching every game!!

Angela,
The game against the Swiss and the game today against Germany were awesome. I watched both games downstairs in the common room of the dorm at my University. As I was watching the swiss game, a few guys came down and started to watch the game with me. After a few minutes one of the guys asked me if this was a women's game. When I told him that in fact it was, all of them were shocked. He finally asked after noticing that most of the players had long hair coming out of the helmets. The guys just assumed that it was a men's game. It never occured to them that it was women out there playing. I told them that you guys would be playing the Germans the next day at 1. So, this afternoon I once again went downstairs to watch the game and to my surprise the boys were already down there trying to find the station. They watched the entire game with me and were asking questions about the team, rules, ect. So, hopefully you guys now hove about 4 or 5 more fans!
I just wanted to thank you and the rest of your teammates for being great ambassadors of the sport. I spent a lot of my youth in hockey rinks (following the footsteps of my brother and dad around) and I know how there are many people out there who do not think that women can not play such a rough sport. So thanks again for all that you do. Best of luck and bring home the gold.

I just saw the game against the German team. Congratulations! The Germans just didn't seem to get their act together on ice. It was nice to see the game which now has gotten me back into watching hockey. I live in southeast Kentucky and it seems nobody here has ever heard of hockey. Despite this I'd do my best to keep up with it. Pittsburgh is my favorite team. But over the years my enthusiasm waned. I've never been to a game, it hardly is ever on tv here. They don't even put the scores in the newspapers here.
So when I flipped through the channel's and saw our excellent women's team beating Germany I felt the love coming back. I'm going to redouble my efforts to keep up with hockey.
I have a question though. Whenever there is a face off it's done in one of the circles. How is it determined which circle to do it in? I've noticed they seem to switch around. I figure the first factor is who caused the penalty. But beyond that I can't figure it out.
I wish the team the best of luck and hope to see more games!

You guys were awesome to watch! Thanks for the great games! First time really paying any attention to women's hockey, and I like it. Much more finesse to this game then the brute-force of men's hockey. I am impressed. You guys make me want to skate again.
And (here's a stupid-man comment if I've ever heard one, no offense) who knew such hot women played hockey? Crashin' the boards, bone-crushing shots, some of the best stick work I've ever seen, and then the helmet comes off and my heart skips a beat! Now that's a game!
Thanks again!

Angela, you girls ROCK!!!!!!!! I'm glad that I never had to play against girls of your skill level back in my amature hockey days. You would have made me look like a joke on the ice. Your coaching looks to be great from what I have seen. Everyone is playing as a team and always seems to be in position all game long. Good luck in your next game and try to get the girls to shoot a little more. Come on, only 60 shots against Germany. <---- insert sarcasum GO USA!!!!!!!

The US Womens team is fun to watch, it's awesome to see women's athletics drawing so much attention (I played D-3 college hockey in MN 7 years ago at Concordia College-Moorhead and we "filled" the stands with about 50 people per game). People are watching from all corners of the U.S. and we are proud to have sent such a great team to represent us in the Olympics. Can't wait to see the next game, I have resorted to scheduling things AROUND when the US women's team is playing! Keep up the good work on the ice and off!

I am a huge fan of the USA Women's Hockey Team. I am so proud to sit here and watch you all skate your dreams during each and every game. I have to admit, I'm a little jealous. We never had ice hockey when I was in school and I bet if we did, I'd have been the first to join. Instead, I played field hockey and watch the NHL games religiously (NJ Devils - favorite team of all time!). And the fact that you have Doc Emerick calling your games - that makes it so much more awesome.
I wish you all the best. Play like it's the last game of your life and most imporantly.... ROCK THE CANADIANS' WORLD! GO FOR THE GOLD USA! We love ya!

Angela, very impressive game. I have watched both US games along with a couple of others. I have found all of the games amazing to watch, the way hockey should be - men's or women's!
I caught the tail end of an Avs - Red Wings game later and the contrast is striking. Your game allows for so much flow, passing, open ice, and movement. All of this is very refreshing, and makes for a very exciting and entertaining game. It takes true skill to play the game the way that you and your team does - you are all artists!
I can't wait until you play some teams that allow for your team to show some of your speed as well! Pass my thanks on to the whole US team, and good luck!

I watched the first 2 games and i have to say that you girls play amazingly. I am a huge hockey fan and I have to say I enjoy watching Women's USA games more then any other games in the sport. Have to say good job for the 2-0 start with both shutouts. Nice team work. I noticed though mostly the German game that you all need to get more shots on goal on 5 on 5 to get ready playing against some of the other better teams. I can't wait to watch your next game. My father, a 90 yr. old Harvard grad who met you 2 yrs ago at Harvard, is watching for both you and Julie Chu!! Keep up the good play----- the TV commentators just mentioned that you are great ambassador for the sport--I couldn't agree more!! Just saw you assist on a Sarah Parson's goal-----nice play by the two of you.
Keep it up----good luck to you and all your teammates--you are all alot of fun to watch!
