February 18, 2006

The past day has been a tough one for me and my team. As I am sure every reader of this site knows, Sweden upset the US last night in a shootout. We went up 2-0, but they never gave up and came back to tie the game. Even after 10 minutes of thrilling overtime, no one could score. We thought that we would take it in the shootout (we won the World Championships in a shootout last year) and never lost hope until we saw Sweden throwing up their gloves to celebrate. I was in disbelief. Shock. I did not know what to do immediately after the game. Our team has put so much into this tournament and have postponed our lives to reach a goal: a gold medal. I never imagined that we would not be in that final game, so in a way, this is a new challenge for me and for the rest of the team. We spend the night silent, watching tv and getting some food in our systems. But, like in many situations in life, you must move forward and appreciate what you have. I am thankful to my family, frineds, and all the wonderful support that we have received through this site. I am planning on printing all of the well wishes and pass them onto the rest of the team. It is at times like these, when we have to use the support that we have around us, rally as teammates, and hold our heads up high. We still have a chance to win a medal and make our country proud. It would be easy to give in and act as if we lost everything, but there is still one game left on our schedule and we can finish a great year with a bronze medal. I am sure I will sit back and reflect on why this happened in a few weeks and perhaps grow because of it (I always say that you grow more when the chips are down versus when everything falls into place) but for now, we are going to prepare like we would for a gold medal final. Hockey is hockey. We know that the Finns are going to be inspired and full of energy against us Monday. I hope that our team can find the strength from within and come together on that night.

On another note, if I can find any positive at all from this loss, I will have to say that this will give more credibility to the sport. It is sad that this lesson has to be taught at our expense, but in the long term, this will give our sport the viability it needs to sustain over the long run. I talked about this in my book for a bit...I said that one day I hope Sweden or Finland can capture a gold or bronze (I guess you get what you wish for sometimes).

So, what next. I am going to put my head down tonight and just relax. I am going to use my mind to refocus my being and to point me in the direction I need to go. This is one thing that most elite athletes spend hours doing, because the mental side of sports can help you win or lose in the end. The team is going to take a light 1 hour skate at 12:30 tomorrow and then have a brief sports psychologist meeting. My mom, sister, and her friend Brianna are coming to visit me in the afternoon so that I can take them into the village and they can see what it is like inside. Perhaps Courtney and I will hit episode 13 of Lost and then try to fall asleep.

Thank you again for all of your support and please keep pulling for us. For anyone who made it to the end of this entry, I am going to be on the Today show Monday morning with a few of my other teammates. We helped Matt Lauer put on goalie gear and took a few shots at him. It was a good time and Darwitz had a sick fake move on him in one of the shots.

ps-My mom told me I am 3% behind Todd Hayes for the Apprentice...so if you want to help a sister out with her job search when all this is done...

Thanks again!!!! Love you all!!!
Angela

Hey Angela, just remember that the fans of the Tulsa Oilers are still behind you and the team 100% and we hope that you guys can take that bronze. You are doing something that most of us can only dream of, and just being able to be there is as important and honorable as winning a medal. Be careful and give 'em hell!!

Ang,

Just remember, To love what you do and feel that it matters, what could be more fun? You all have made many sacrifices as you said, and trust me those don't go unnoticed. I know it's hard to swallow. But things happen for a reason. Four years from now, we can only hope Old Glory will be raised at the top of the countries flags for gold. Keep working. Your goals are never out of reach.

Stay strong ladies and take Bronze. You have more than 10 million supporters around the world. And just remember, those soldiers in Iraq, are just as happy you're representing your country like they are. They just want you all, (all Olyimpians in general to do well).

Heads up ladies. You all rock.

And like I said, you're still my hero Angela!

Yes, even the high school players on triple a team's like myself.

You all have showed us that it's possible to reach your dreams. And in four years. Do it again.

You're still my hero Ang.

Heads up ladies! Go get that bronze.

Angela,

It has been such a thrill to follow you and the team. You are really an inspiration to young girls who love the sport of hockey. My daughter, Jamie, is 13 and has been playing hockey for 3 years. She played a game at the Harvard Arena a few weeks back and was inspired by the arena and all of the women's hockey players posted around the arena, especially you. Good luck in your final game and no matter what, know that you and the team have made a real difference in the lives of a lot of young players.

Thanks for the thrills!

Angela--

Unfortunately, I have been unable to watch the last two games due to my work schedule-----but rest assured, that I will be watching on Monday---as will many others from around the world. Maybe that is when you and your teammates will really need our support. I have been fortunate to watch you, in person, play a few times over the last 10 years and even meet you twice----and watched Julie Chu a few times when Harvard was playing---athletes know that one any given night the underdog can win----not because they were the better team that night, not even because they tried harder or worked harder------it's just because that is the way it is in sports-----I recall back to my much younger years-- how the Harvard football team came back in the last 2 minutes to tie Yale 29-29-----------maybe the true test of an athlete is in not giving up/giving in when it might be so easy to do so-------you and all of your teammates have worked hard for years to get to monday's game--it's not the game you had hoped and dreamed to play in, but you have nothing to be ashamed of and everything to be proud of by being in the bronze medal ----each of you! It is indeed an honor to have made that team---you and the others were selected not only because of your individual talents and skills but because of the desire you all have to work as a team--to be a team----to represent yourselves, your families, even your respective colleges ---Harvard, Minn, Dartmouth and many others-----------You are all inspirations ---not just to young American girls---hockey players-----but to the young and old alike-girls and boys, men and women-whether we are wannabe athletes, former athletes or active athletes-- in grade school, high school, college or long thereafter!!! Many of us had dreams of the Olympics too---but never made it---maybe because the sport in which we played was not one in the Olympics----maybe we would have loved to play hockey as a kid (like I did) but there was no hockey for girls over 40 yrs ago-----
But you and your teammates represent the best in sports -----in the US and around the world----

so as each of you take the ice on monday---do so with the fire you have had in your hearts all these years---do so with your heads held high----and no matter the final result-------please realize that we are still proud of you individually and collectively-----you will all continue to inspire us long after the closing ceremonies!

Best wishes, Angela, to you and your teammates! GO USA women's hockey team-------
ALL THE BEST ON MONDAY AGAINST FINLAND-----hope to see you again (in person) soon!!

Have a good skate today, and enjoy the fam, and *hang in there, Big #4* You gals'll be fine on Monday.

It's not the falling down that matters--it's the dusting yourself off and getting back up that counts. Medal or not, you're doing Hockeytown proud, and you've got more perspective on what happened than you'll ever need. You're still a champion, you're still a warrior.

And you're still an amazing hockey player and human being, and we'll root for EVERYBODY on Team USA, including when you come home. Just tell us when the parade'll be. We'll be there to welcome you home, bronze doughnut or not.

The sight of your team out cheering on the men against Slovakia today wearing smiles so soon after a heartbreaking loss really underscores what a great group of not only athletes but human beings you and your teamates are. We are truly lucky to have such a great group to represent the US and USA hockey. We're all behind you 100% and you ladies should be very proud of the buzz you have created for womens hockey. You have sacrificed so much to make a difference. You beat adversery in every form to get to were you are and you will continue to beat it for the rest of your lives. You have been blessed with ability and each of you have escalted that ability ten-fold with your sweat, passion, determination and heart. It stings now but always know that you all are my heros.

Angela,

Good luck in the Bronze game. I have really enjoyed watching you and the team in the Olympics. Even though it's disappointing that you won't get to play for the gold, I hope you and the team know that you didn't disappoint your fans. You've worked hard and made sacrifices that most people will never fathom in search of your goals, and you've played at a level and in circumstances that most people never dream of. While those those may not be tangible things like a medal, they're every bit as important in showing what you're made of and how far you've come.

I hope that you'll bring home the bronze, but just as importantly, I hope that you and your teammates will enjoy the remainder of the time you have in these Olympics; that you'll remember the simple joys of the game that made you fall in love with it in the first place, and that you'll soak the joys of camraderie with each other, savor the cheers of the crowd, and be overwhelmed with pride in what you've accomplished.

Go USA!

I know it's hard for you to lose after working so hard to get to the gold medal game, but Bronze is still an honor that many people would be dying to have. You have done so much to influence young hockey players all over, including me. You have been my idol for a long time and watching you has showed me ways to make my game better, and to set my goals high. I'm also sick of people telling me defense can't score or be offensive, and watching you just shows me that you can control a game, even if you are playing defense. We all know you deserved to win, but hockey is the kind of game where sometimes the best team doesn't come out on top. No matter what happens, I will always think you are greatest team in the world. Good luck! I'm looking forward to seeing you guys win tomorrow!

Oh, and I also want to thank you for signing my book. I was so happy when i got it! Thanks for everything, you are awesome. You and the team are great, and just watching you play is amazing. Again, good luck! Kick some Finnish butt!

I can only imagine how devestating the loss was for you ladies on Friday, but I am STILL so proud of you all.

I am a soon to be 33 year old woman who wishes to heck I found hockey earlier in my life so that I could've played. I have had the chance to referee pee wee hockey and I loved watching the girls getting their starts so early in the sport, completely and happily unaware of the earlier obsticals of women in the sport.

You are ALL inspirations to these young ladies and you give them female role models to follow if they, too, decide they want to persue hockey.

You all have succeed in giving this "old lady" some pride in what a woman CAN do!

Go FOR it!

Typical USA behaviour, close your eyes to comments you cannot mentally deal with.

I sent you more than one POLITE comment (no swearing or insults) about your comments about the Canada hockey team, and you don't post them.

Shows your weakness.

It's great to see all the people wishing you well ...but wouldn't it be impressive if you had the guts to throw up a couple of the critical ones?

No guts.

RESPONSE:::::::
Hello, This is a message from Angela’s website administrator. I am helping her post comments, and although she reads them, she does not review them prior. You mentioned how your last 2 comments were not posted, and I assume this is you again.

The explanation is that this is a blog, not a discussion board for debate and it is not being used to breed negativity or be a political discussion platform. You’ll see Angela has developed this blog to bring the Olympic experience to people. If she chooses to write a journal entry about the scores subject, then you would have a place to post these thoughts, but as of now they do not have a place on this site. This is a positive platform being used to SUPPORT the team and all that is ice hockey, and be an inspiration to those of us who have not lived such triumphs.

This was the first time I watched women's hockey and really cared about the game. I don't watch to support any country, I watch to learn to play better and a chance to see the best women players from around the world compete.

I started playing 2 years ago and have a whole new respect for hockey. The team did great this year and I plan to watch where the women go from this point.

My one problem with Olympic women's hockey is the lack of checking. I know they have body contact but it's not the same. All I can say is if men can do it, so should we.

Also I hope you all support the paralympic sled hockey team who will be playing March 10-19!
