USA vs Sweden
February 17, 2006
A 2-0 U.S. lead in the semifinals turned into a 2-2 tie, and went into sudden death OT and ended in a shootout. (the first one in Women's Olympic history). At 3-2, this is the first loss ever to a team other than Canada.

Angela, today's game was heartbreaking, and it was even worse to see you guys sitting on the bench while Sweden was celebrating their victory. It was really comforting to see you guys stay together as a team, though, even as you must have been so disappointed. I know you can come back on Monday and win. At least there's one good thing about you playing in the bronze medal game - it's earlier, so I don't have to skip class to see it! ;-)
Really, though, you girls had a great effort today. Don't get too down on yourselves; America's behind you 100%!!!

You’re still my hero. And it is always exciting for me to watch you play. I think you once told me that everyone has their day, and today’s was Rooth’s. On the bright side, you can hang a Gold (98) Silver(02) and……maybe Bronze on your wall… it’s a full house! Good luck and remember that playing hockey is fun ;-) You could be working 40 hours a week….

Angela,
My heart goes out to you and to the entire team because you must be so disappointed. But you have not lost a single fan and we are every bit as proud of you today as we were yesterday and will be tomorrow. It is sad that we live in a winner-take-all society where only the gold medal winners receive the admiration that is due to all of you. Your accomplishments remain enormous and far beyond those of we mere mortals.
Stay strong,

Ang,
Unfortunately, I was unable to tape today's game as I forgot and was in school. I'm sorry about your loss. I know it's hard and I know it hurts right now. But you girl's play your hearts out each and every game no matter what. We're all behind you whether you take first or last. Today's game only showed the hard work and effort that you all have put in to make women's hockey grow and become a dominant force in the sports world. Now go get the Bronze from those Canucks or Finns whoever it is you will be playing.
You're still my hero Rugger, and that's never going to change.
And to the entire team. I know it's not much coming from a high school junior in a small town in Ohio, but stay strong. It's not the end of the world as it may seem right now. But I know you'll be back in four years ready to take the Gold again.
As always, GO USA! USA! All the Way!

To Angela and USA Team~I was at work following the game online, and I know you and the ladies gave every ounce of effort in the game today. Your efforts should be applauded! A loss in overtime never truly indicates how much effort a team gives and how good of a game it really was. You did not let anyone down - we love you no matter what happens! I am in my 40s and I play goalie--I have to admit that there are times when for some strange reason a goalie just has her day - it appears it was Sweden's turn today. Words don't take the pain away from today's loss I know. But be assured that every woman who drives their kids to hockey practices, who loves and plays this wonderful game at every level in the US, look up to you and your teammates as our "Heroes and Inspiration"!
We thank you for all the enjoyment you've given us as players and fans, and most importantly as an American. Some of us who will never experience the Olympics as you are, we live our hockey dreams through you and team USA. You are all a true inspiration and best of luck in the next game and next Olympics! You go girls!

You ladies are what's great and whole about our great sport. I only wish I was able to still play. Hockey is the greatest love of my life. I played semi pro till I tore my acl 4 times. Chin up there, big #4. Champions give it their all--that includes not giving up when they lose.
It happens. When a game goes to a shootout, it's as much luck and a hot goalie as anything else. Sometimes, as a goalie, I know I get in a zone, and the puck looks like a beach ball. And sometimes, the puck looks like a bb.
So you're going for a bronzed doughnut instead of a golden one. It's still bronze.
And whether you win or lose, in all honesty, it doesn't matter to your fans. You are a champion, you've proven it before, and you'll prove it again. You're doing Michigan and the entire USA proud, and we'll be rooting for you till the end--and our pride in cheering for you just isn't dependent on the result. It's because you and the gals are our heroes, win or lose.
Now if you need to go have a good cry, have a good cry, 'cause we all do it, even the guys. Let it out, let it go, and lace up those skates tomorrow and get back out there.
You're still an Olympian, you're still a Champion, and when you come back to Detroit, we'll all be cheering for you, because you rule, whether you've got a doughnut around your neck or not.
HANG IN THERE, BIG #4! And Finnish 'em off tomorrow.

You all have done a wonderful jobs representing your country! A medal is still a medal whether the color is gold or bronze. I guess it was the day for the Swedes to get lucky. I am not a fair weather fan and will continue to watch your efforts in Turin and in the women hockey league. It was written some 4,000 years ago that it is not whether you win or lose but how you play the game. You guys did well. The team demostrated sportsmen ships after the game and that image is perhaps all some will recall in the years ahead. America needs good will ambassadors like all of you. Take care win the bronze.

Ang,
Thanks for keeping up the blog. As a hockey fan I was pumped for the start of your games. The team did an amazing job against Switzerland, Germany, and Finland. I haven't really followed women's hockey before but I have become a major fan and supporter during this Olympics. Because of your team now when I go out to play hockey with my brothers I have someone (actually a whole team) that I can feel proud to emulate. I am sorry about how the Sweden game turned out but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. As an athlete I know its tough to hear that winning isn't everything but it’s true. Although I am sad, as I know the team is, that you guys won't bring home the gold you are still Olympians with a great chance at bronze (pretty damn good if you ask me) and inspirations to all young girls especially this one. So Thanks Team USA for all of your hard work and for helping all of us to dream bigger then before. We are all still so proud of you and love the you.

Tough outcome in the shootout but it was a joy to watch you and the team on the ice. I know that there's nothing we can say or write to make it feel better, but do know that you have many supporters here. I'll admit that the US Women's team (and particularly, watching your smile and energy) has made a hockey fan out of this Southerner. Besides, I like to support alumni!

Angela, my work and I are proud of your and team USA's accomplishments from start to begining. I am a former Canadian college hockey player and tammate to Helen, and Chanda. I am proud to see your a excellent role model on and off the ice, and perfect to be representing our country. I can't say anything to make your team feel better either, but I can say that we support you women and the things you have done to change the face of women's hockey, and give inspiration to the younger generation. Congrats on going this far, and the goals you have met. Some would say its should not matter what the color of the medal is, but the memories made to get that medal are sometimes more important. Keep your heads up, and remember we are supporting you all here in Rhode Island. Congrats again.

I must admit when I came home from work and read on the net that USA had lost I was shocked. But then I had dinner last night with some friends who had watched the game and they said we lost in a shootout and that made it a little easier. But Team USA has played with the best and I still think they are the best. So go out there and win the Bronze and stand proud on that podium. I still love ya all. BE PROUD!!!!!
